Ankasa & Sekondi-Takoradi Tours

**ANKASA CONSERVATION AREA**

The Ankasa Conservation Area is situated in Southwest Ghana, bordering the Ivory Coast. Spanning 509 km², this protected area is enveloped by ancient rainforest and is recognized as the most biodiverse region in Ghana. It comprises the only wet evergreen rainforest that remains largely unspoiled. Home to over 800 plant species, Ankasa includes several endemics, such as the recently discovered *Psychotria*.

The forest sustains viable populations of large, charismatic mammals, including the Forest Elephant, Bongo, Leopard, and Yellow-backed Duiker. It features six confirmed and three unconfirmed primate species, such as the Western Chimpanzee and three rare or endangered subspecies endemic to Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana: the Roloway Diana Monkey, Geoffroy’s Pied Colobus, and White-naped Sooty Mangabey. The area boasts an impressive avian population, with over 200 bird species, most of which are dependent on forest habitats. Several rare birds endemic to the Upper Guinea Forest can be found here, including the White-breasted Guinea Fowl (*Agelastes meleagrides*), Yellow-throated Olive Greenbul, and Rufous-winged Illadopsis.

The extensive network of smaller streams, coupled with the three main rivers of the protected area, supports a variety of reptiles, including the Broad-fronted Crocodile. Over 600 butterfly species, with many endemics, have been recorded, and the network of streams serves as a vital breeding ground for numerous fish species in the region, as well as an important watershed for rivers west and south of the protected area. With a wealth of undiscovered plants and animal species, Ankasa presents a pristine laboratory for scientists and students. Its tranquil environment is also conducive to religious and recreational tourism.

**Getting There**
The entrance road to the park is located at Sowodadzem, 120 km from Takoradi and 22 km from Elubo along the Takoradi-Elubo section of the Ghana-Côte d’Ivoire International Highway. Visitors can reach the park by private vehicles, public transport (locally known as “tro-tro”), or taxis. Plans are in place to provide bicycles at Sowodadzem (6 km from the park entrance) for backpackers.

**Visitor Facilities**
The visitor information center is located approximately 100 meters from the main gate, staffed to provide essential information to visitors.
